People's nutritional state can protect them or predispose towards a chronic disease. A balanced nutrition is essential for a good health, physical growth and development, as well to regulate the basic body processes. Medical treatments for several diseases include diet therapy. Thus, nutrition is both a preventive and therapeutic science. 

Precise and accurate food, diet and nutrition are of critical importance in the treatment, speedier recuperation and prevention of disease as well as for keeping up the good health and keeping away the sickness. The right food works as a catalyst to the medicine to act faster. Nutrition is an input and foundation for the health, development and wellbeing.

Our department provides a comprehensive dietetic service to both in-patients and out-patients. The service exists to improve the health of the individual patient by appropriate nutrition intervention.

All Inpatients are assessed by dietician within 24 hours of admission. Re-assessment is done as per the scoring of initial assessment. All in patients are visited daily to ensure that they get therapeutic diets according to their nutritional need.

Additionally, Nutrition and Dietetics department also provides regular diet lectures and camps for corporates, communities. Dietitian helps its patients in identifying and in administration of right food which an individual requires based on his disease, body type, family history of any ailments and other bio chemical parameters. The only pursuant and motivation of this department with its dedicated and selfless members is to achieve milestones towards a better quality life for its patients.

Medical Nutrition Therapy:

1) Admitted Patient

The Department of Dietetics provides normal, modified and therapeutic diets to general and private ward patients. A careful dietary history of each admitted patient is taken, their blood parameters are reviewed to assess his/ her nutritional status and diet is provided as per the recommendation of the treating doctor. Extensive bed to bed ward rounds are undertaken for this purpose and later to check the compliance with the prescribed diet and /or to carry out any modification as per the requirements of the patients. Diet charts bearing detail dietary instruction to be followed at home given to refer patients at the time of the discharge.

Nutrition Evaluation

No individual has the same calorie, fat, proteins, minerals or vitamin intake requirements. Every individual has a different body type with different food habits coupled with different diseases, past family or past ailments history. Hence, the nutritional and dietary requirements cannot be same for every individual too. Dietician critically analyse the requirements of each patient or an individual who has come for a help from us and we prescribe the requisite based on the detailed investigation and bio-chemical test analysis.

Diet Counselling:

Our main focus is on the nutritional management of disease and conditions that are linked to body weight, food choices, eating habits and physical activity. Diet Counselling is an important component of the management of any chronic illness. For effective interaction we do periodical and regular assessment in which we – Assess, Advice, Agree, Assist & Arrange the nutritional plan as appropriate by the body conditions. We try to use the application of nutritional principles and guidelines when caring for patients with common chronic illnesses. We use various references and tools, including clinical treatment guidelines, diet assessment methods, estimation of portion sizes, and nutrition content of various common foods to provide apposite nutritional care. We run both OPD and IPD diet counselling clinic for the management of all the chronic illnesses. We assess the nutritional needs and provide one-to-one counselling. We also provide training for staff on various aspects of nutrition.

2) O.P.D patients-

The O.P.D patients referred from various O.P.D viz. Medicine, Surgery, Obs& Gynaec, Pediatrics, Cardiac, Orthopedics, Oncology, Gastro & others are given dietary instructions.

3) General Health Checkup:-

We provide Special diet counseling for GHC patients who may require or referred by Doctors.

Food Service Management:-

Diet is a complimentary service to all admitted patients. As soon as new admission comes to the ward, a diet is raised in HIMS and diet slip will be given to the dietetics department and department action is taken accordingly.. A daily clinic cyclic menu is provided to the patient to provide a variety in the day to day diet different seasonal vegetables and breakfast variations are supplied as per the patient disease and condition between six to eight services per day are provided as per patient's therapeutic requirement.

Internship Training:-

The department of dietetics is running an internship program since last 13-14 years and provides internship training throughout the year.

We offer internship programmed of 3 months and 6 months to the students with a dietetic and nutrition- specific technical knowledge base in a multi-disciplinary and multicultural environment. Our goal in Dietetics and Nutrition is to train dietetic professionals who will promote nutrition as a critical part of disease treatment/ prevention and integrate nutrition services into clinical, home and community-based health and social networks.
